Have the Geeks won?

I have been asking myself this question in last few months after seeing our podcast go from strength to strength and because of the sheer volume of geek related news out there in cyberspace.
We here at The Last Picture Show Podcast use an app called Flipboard to keep up to date with multiple news feeds, it's a wonderful app and includes the ability to customise your incoming feeds to include Twitter/Facebook and all kinds of different sources. But more interestingly you can customise this app with dedicated geek feeds to get your fix from all of the best geek websites.

A dictionary definition of a geek reads: a person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy or a person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept

This maybe technically accurate but I believe is a little unfair, in today's world of always connected, 24hr technology everybody needs geeks!!! In every IT department of every workplace in the country there are geeks and nerds with their noses to the grindstone making sure you can send emails, browse the web, connect to networks, answer phones and all of the other technological devices you use everyday.

The Iron Maiden T-Shirt, stonewash jean wearing stereotype's do not apply nowadays, some of the most successful individuals in the modern world. Elon Musk who owns two of the most exciting and dynamic companies on the planet is an uber-geek who had Tony Stark modelled after him!!!!

Avengers Assemble, The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spiderman are three of the top five grossing movies this year - all three are comic book movie adaptations and are part of the geek domain. One of the most original and successful tv series of the last few years centres around a household of geeks!! (The Big Bang Theory)

Being a geek is cool, it is sexy and people respect you for it nowadays! There's now shame in busting out your knowledge of the best taverns in Skyrim or discussing the latest smartphone at the water cooler.

I think it all comes down to this truth - People want to be us so fly your geek flag high and ping your default gateway to your hearts content!!
